Mac OS pre-X

  • Disk Watcher automatically checks your disks for corruption, keeps a log of the results, and informs you when your disks need to be fixed. All by itself. No more worries. Very easy to use for home users, as it works just fine 'right out of the box', yet is highly configurable, making it a great tool for Mac network administrators too. Free 30-day fully-functional trial period.
  • SynchPPP is a small application that allows you to synchronise the status [running/not running] of an application of your choice with the status of your PPP connection. In other words: it will launch an application when you connect to the Internet and will quit that same application when you disconnect.

  • iCabSessionSaver records currently open windows in iCab and allows you to restore that session in case iCab crashes.
  • Daily Startup X, a Mac OS X port of The Dailies, allows you to have items launched on login no more than once per day, or once per weekday. Place anywhere (/Applications, ~/Applications, or ~/Library/Scripts would be good locations) and add to your Login Items (System Preferences->Accounts->Login Items). If it doesn't already exist, a folder ~/Library/Daily Startup Items will be created. Files in that folder will be launched when you log in, but no more often then once per day. If you want items to be launched only on certain days of the week, you may create folders inside ~/Library/Daily Startup Items. Name them after the weekday (Monday, Tuesday, etc.) and place files in there.
  • Suspendor 1.0b1 allows you to suspend processes, including GUI apps. Nice when you temporarily need all the CPU you can get. Somewhat experimental. Launch through ScriptMenu (/Applications/AppleScript/Install Script Menu)
  • rSU 1.0b1 let's you run Software Update on a remote machine over ssh through the GUI. Runs RepairPermissions before and after. Somewhat experimental. Launch through ScriptMenu (/Applications/AppleScript/Install Script Menu)
  • SMARTer reads mounted disks' S.M.A.R.T. status and reports it. Add to login items or run regularly through a cron.
  • FullScreen 1.0 let's you tell QuickTime Player to play full screen without having to buy QuickTime Pro. Allows you to set size and background colour. Place in ~/Library/Scripts/Applications/QuickTime player/ and run from ScriptMenu (/Applications/AppleScript/Install Script Menu)
  • updateFinder is a stay-open applet that tries to get the pre-Tiger Finder to show up to date information on how much free disk space is available. For reasons beyond me the Mac OS X pre-Tiger Finder doesn't do this by itself... Install wherever you want (~/Library/Scripts would make sense) and make sure it is always running (for example by adding it to your login items, through System Preferences->Accounts->Startup Items). Known issue: having any file (not a folder) selected in a Finder window will make the Finder not update that Finder window... Oh well, at least we've got pretty pulsating blue blobs all over the place :)
  • Clone, version 1.0 for Jaguar and version 1.1 for Panther, is a Toolbar Script for Mac OS X. It creates a clone of the current Finder window next to, or below it. Useful when you need to copy or move files.
  • BatteryAlarm 1.0b1 warns when battery power is below a user-definable threshold (default = 5 minutes left). Multiple-battery aware. Place anywhere and add to Login Items.

Mac OS anything

Mac OS pre-X

  • The Dailies give you Daily Startup Items and Daily Shutdown Items folders - for things that you want launched no more than once per day, or even only on certain days of the week.
  • MailURL let's you quickly mail someone the URL and title of a webpage.
  • "Open HTTP in Opera" and "View site in Opera" 1.0.2 are Apple Data Detectors actions for Opera.
  • Validate at W3C 1.0.1 (for Opera) is an AppleScript based plug in for FinderPop. It gives you a contextual menu item in Opera to submit the current page to the W3C's HTML validator. This version fixes a bug that could result in valid HTML pages being considered invalid by the W3C validator.
  • ToggleFiSh 1.0 is a small script to toggle FileSharing on/off. I wrote it because under Mac Os 9.0.x opening the FileSharing control panel can take ages - and I don't have ages to spare. Optionally makes use of "Play Sound" OSAX and "Notify" OSAX. Get them at <http://www.osaxen.com>. No promises, no guarantees, but it should work fine. It may even work under other Mac OS versions.
  • Open HTTP/FTP on remote Mac is a set of two Apple Data Detectors action files. ADD users will love this (or they should ;)). Ctrl-click a URL and have it opened by another Mac on your (AppleTalk) network. If your main Mac crashes, the other Mac can still happily continue the downloads you fed it. If you're in a classroom full of Macs, instantly tell all Macs (or just some) to open the same Web page. Optionally finds all available Macs on your network.
